Good evening everyone

Here we are on Sunday again and with it another one of my lengthy letters.

S.M.S. for 6 - 21

Posted by swolfgram on Jun 21 2020 - 8:44pm

Good evening everyone

Last week all the scouts in attendance were able to wrap up the 1st aid merit badge.  This week we are going to be doing something a little more light and less stressful.
Please remember the bathrooms are closed at this time, so go before you come.

Monday Meeting 6 - 22
Tomorrow evening the weather reports are calling for the possibility of rain.   If the weather man is correct and it does rain instead of meeting in the back by the kitchen building we will be meeting in the front underneath the big pavilion.

The main topic for tomorrow will be a few light and fun team building games. Simple things such as Frisbee golf, Baseball and knot challenges.  A light and easy night.

Flag retirement ceremony

Monday June 29th we will be holding a flag retirement ceremony at Good Templar Park.  This will be a special 2 hour meeting as we have a large amount of flags to retire.  We will have five time slots to choose from.  Each time slot is broken into 30 minute intervals. The time slots are from  6 - 6:30,  6:30 - 7,  7 - 7:30,  7:30 - 8,  8 - 8:30.  We will stop retiring flags at 8 o'clock so that the flags have a chance to completely burn.  I will have the sign-up list this Monday.

S.M.S. for 6 - 28

Posted by swolfgram on Jun 28 2020 - 10:07pm
Good evening everyone

Sorry for this being a little late everyone I was waiting for a weather report and wanted to be as accurate as possible.  I will get into that in just a moment.
Earlier this week I sent out a major update on summer camp.   If for whatever reason you did not see it I will place the update at the bottom of this letter.  Now that Illinois is in Phase 4 we have the ability to do something fun and educational for the scouts in July.  July has always been the month for our summer camp trip and with any luck this July will hold to that tradition.  As of now everything seems to be coming together slowly but surely.   Please take a look at the details and if you are available that week please attend our Closer-To-Home Summer Camp 2020.  I know that it won't be the same as Camp Freeland Leslie but in the current circumstances it could be just as fulfilling and worthwhile.

Monday meeting 6 - 29
This Monday was meant to be our 1st flag ceremony of the season.  The forecast is calling for isolated thunderstorms and rain during the time that we would be at the park.  At this time I am postponing the flag retirement ceremony until later on in July. I see it as counterproductive trying to retire flags when you are in the rain or dodging storms.   As of right now it is only a 30% chance but better safe than sorry.
For this meeting we will be going over summer camp merit badges and starting to look at our badge possibilities.

Mondays in July
Monday the 5th and Monday the 13th
(Depending on what happens in our state) we will be going over details for our summer camp.  On Monday the 5th  We will be working on our menu for the week.  On Monday the 13th  We will be finalizing the details  And scheduling merit badge counselors and teachers aides.

From the mid week update

S.M.S. for 6 - 7

Posted by swolfgram on Jun 7 2020 - 9:08pm

Good evening everyone

Now that we're finally back in action after a long forced hiatus there is a lot to go over and little time to do it.   A quick turnaround in our program schedule could mean the boys have a resurrected summer activity lineup with not a lot of stagnation.

Good Templar Park update
This past Thursday I spoke to Heather Snyder the caretaker of Good Temper Park.  She was able to give me a few updates on what is happening at the park at this time.  For the time being the members side of the park is going to be specifically for the members of the park. The members have requested that no outside guests use that side of the park for the time being.
The soccer groups that normally use the park throughout the spring and summer will be there using the fields but not in any great quantity. They will be holding minor practice's and skirmishes but nothing big for the time being.  Our troop still has almost sole usage of the park as we have been associated with them for more than a decade now.
We have the ability to hold merit badges, camp-outs and other service projects and day outings. We also have been given the green light to use the better bathrooms inside the kitchen building versus the large bathrooms.

Monday 6 - 8, Patrol Leaders Council and Committee meeting
We will be holding our monthly P.L.C. (6pm - 7pm) and C.M. (7pm - 8:30pm ish) IN PERSON over at Good Temper Park on the park side of the park.   Weather reports say that it's going to be sunny Monday evening so we will be back by the kitchen building. If for whatever reason rain comes up we will be meeting by the front pavilion. We have been using WebEx over the past few weeks to some success and I don't think we will be stopping any time soon. If you cannot make it to our in person P.L.C. or C.M. meetings  You can tune in to our Webex broadcast starting at 6pm.  There will be some big topics and big issues to go over so please attend or tune in.

The First Aid merit badge
As of right now a majority of our 1st and 2nd years have participated in the 1st portion of the First Aid merit badge. The book learning and discussion portions of the badge are fairly easy to complete anywhere at any time.  The portion we still have to finish is the hands on portion.  I am waiting to hear back from the park as to what is going on over there the next few weekends. As soon as I know we can set up a few times to do the hands on stuff.

The Back to Basics camp-out
On the last weekend of June we will be having a Back to Basics camp-out at Good Templar Park. This camp out will be a good way for all scouts to be able to bone up on the skills that they have not had a chance to practice or have lost entirely over the past few months. Camping just like riding a bike requires constant practice and if we fall out of practice the best thing that can be done is get right back on and start pedaling hard.  I will have more info on it Monday evening.

Just so you know

We all know that nothing is going to be perfect at this time. There will be worries and problems come up over the next months. I just want to let everyone know that Joyce and I will be doing everything we can to get the troop back to normal.

S.M.S. for 7 - 12

Posted by swolfgram on Jul 12 2020 - 9:25pm
Good Evening Everyone

This week I have a few updates and have included the midweek update if you missed it.   Everything below will be talked about at tomorrow's meeting so if you have not been to a meeting in some time, now is the time to attend.

Monday P.L.C and C.M
This Monday is our Patrol Leaders Council meeting at 6:00p and Committee meeting at 7:00p at the park.  Since this will be the final meeting before we try to go through with our version of summer camp I will need as many people and as much input as possible.  As of now I have only received merit badge requests from a few people.  Tomorrow evening is the deadline so, if for whatever reason you've been sitting on the fence about submitting your merit badge requests NOW is the time to do it!  If we cannot get any additional people to participate and sign up on the website I don't believe we will be able to hold this event beginning July 20th.  It's coming up fast, the week after next.

Cost of camp update
The cost of camp estimate was originally $50 per person for the week. After doing a lot of price checking and estimates as of right now the cost of camp will range between $50.00 - $75.00 per person which is considerably less expensive than CFL. I'm still waiting to hear back from Good Templar Park on whether we can use the indoor bathrooms or not. If we cannot (like I am starting to believe) we will have to rent a few portable toilets.  I spoke to the people over at Lakeshore Waste Management and their price on a pair of toilets was 350.00. If anyone has any leads on cheaper toilets for the week please let me know

The other cost that we are running into is the cost of cleaning supplies. As everyone knows cleaning supplies are a hot commodity and everybody wants a warehouse full of hand sanitizer and toilet paper at all times.  The downside is of course the initial cost.  However the upside of the troop having a lot of cleaning supplies on hand is that they will at some time in the future be used.  Whether we will have our own small stockpile, it takes a while for soap to go bad. We can always use them on other camp outs and events.

Backup plans for camp. Options have changed slightly.
When it comes to scouts we always have to have other plans in place in order to make something happen.  Because we seem to be living in uncertain times, maybe for the foreseeable future, there are a few options for us to still have a summer camp.  This will be based on what happens in the state and the toilet availability.

Considering the necessity for alternatives these are the plans.

Plan A, (the one that we are on right now) Monday through Thursday we meet at the park in the morning to work on badges leaving around 7:00 p.m. Lunches & dinners included.  On Friday we meet at the park at 6pm and hold a weekend camp out.

Plan B, We meet Monday through Friday at the park working on badges until around 7pm.  We WOULD NOT hold a camp out that weekend but meet on Friday same time to work on Scout skills.  This is just in case the park says we can't camp overnight that weekend for whatever reason.

Plan C, Have merit badge work that week from 8:30a - 3:00p Monday through Friday. We will have lunch but no dinner, which will also help reduce the cost.

Plan D, We would cancel altogether (this of course being the worst case scenario).

We have all of these options just in case of any changes.

If you didn't catch the recent midweek update here is what happened.

If you haven't made a decision, this is another reason you should be here.
Due to the virus, Brock D was unable to complete his position of responsibility for the troop.  This is one of the last requirements he needs for his Eagle scout position of responsibility.  Our summer camp allows him to be a camp counselor which fulfills a special scoutmaster selected service project for the troop.  Not only would you be helping yourself by earning some badges and some rank requirements, you will be helping Brock get one step closer to earning his Eagle.

Camp tenting changes

Troop ones' policy has always been that you must tent with one of your fellow scouts until you reach the rank of 1st class.  Because of the virus we are lifting this requirement and you can do 1 of 3 things.  Option one,  you can tent alone and if you have your own tent (four person or smaller) you can bring it with you and use it exclusively.  Option two you can still tent with a partner but you will have to sleep head to toe versus head to head this follows some of the guidelines that national and council has recommended for tenting partners for the foreseeable future.  Option three if you have a larger tent (six person or greater) there should be plenty of space for you and your partner(s).

S.M.S. for 7 - 5

Good evening everyone
I hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July this past weekend.   With everything being canceled I hope that if your neighborhood had any fireworks displays you were able to enjoy them and have some fun.

S.M.S. for 8 - 16

Posted by swolfgram on Aug 16 2020 - 8:38pm

Good evening everyone

I hope everyone was able to stay safe and didn't get blown away or suffer any damage by last Monday's thunderstorms. For the 1st time in a long while we had to cancel the meeting because of severe weather.  We now have a Zoom account for the troop and if anything crazy happens in the near future we will be ready.
