S.M.S for 12 - 20

Posted by swolfgram on Dec 20 2020 - 9:25pm

Good evening everyone

I am happy to start tonight's letter off with some good news.  Earlier this afternoon Jack Drake became troop one's latest Eagle scout.   CONGRATULATIONS JACK!!  After a lot of time, energy and effort the hard work paid off.   Only a small number of scouts ever get the chance to make it this far.

Possible service projects this year and next
Well it happened again, the weather man lied to me. I was originally going to call for a service project this past Saturday over at Camp Kane.  The weather report told me it was going to be snowing and rainy most of the day.  It turned out to be fairly pleasant.   Next weekend depending if anyone is home for the holidays (we probably will be)  it's supposed to be a fantastic weekend to get out and do stuff.  I will be trying to put together a Saturday morning and early afternoon service project with a possible Sunday project as a follow up. This could wrap up our year with at least a couple more service hours and something else to do with the group.

Cubsicle service hours
Mrs. Griswold sent me this opportunity that I think we should try to take part in. The two dates are January 2nd and January 9th.   This would be a perfect time to assist Cub Scouts and have a great start to the New Year. Here are the details.
we will have three - two hour sessions.   They will be as follows:

            9:00 am to 11:00 am
            11:30 am to 1:30 pm
            2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Staff would need to be at camp from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.  Lunch will be provided.

The theme for this year's Cubscicle is "Cubditarod", and the following sessions are being offered:

        Sledding (bring your own sled)
        Broomball
        Nature - Animal tracks
        Mason jar lanterns
        Popsicle stick sleds
        Sling Shots
        Volcanoes
        S'Mores

I will be helping out on the 2nd.  If there are any scouts that would like to volunteer for the day or have any interest in helping out there will be a sign up on the website.

Monday meeting 12 - 21
For Monday's meeting we will be going over our annual year in review.  What went right, what went wrong, if there's anything we can improve upon and everything in between.  There was plenty this year that didn't go as planned but when everything is said and done what  type of lemonade were we able to make out of this year's lemons.  We will also be going over a few requirements still in limbo and a contest I hope to be launching this week.

Tune in with your preferred mode of communication via our zoom channel.
Below is the link to the Zoom channel.  I will send it out again tomorrow afternoon just in case you forget.

S.M.S for 12 - 22 The Pre - Christmas Edition

Posted by swolfgram on Dec 22 2019 - 10:12pm
Good evening everyone
Just because we don't have a meeting this Monday doesn't mean that there isn't anything good to talk about. AND... just because this is the end of the year doesn't mean that there's no new news. Here is the news you need to know......

No Meeting Monday
We DO NOT have a meeting this Monday however we DO have some updates as far as the January 6th Monday meeting. For that meeting we will be participating in a Feed My Starving Children evening event. The boys are still off from school at that time so we thought it may be a really good way to get back in the swing of things. Pack 260 as of now will be joining us that evening. They have a potential 6 scouts that are considering continuing on into boy scouts.  If we can show them a good time and have some fun with them are chances we believe are greatly increased.

Personal note about F.M.S.C
I will not be able to make the Feed My Serving Children event because it is my Christmas Eve. I am Serbian Eastern Orthodox and we celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January. I will be up in Milwaukee from the 4th to the 11th.

2020 Outlook
This coming year if you go to our website you will be able to see the objective scheduled for that particular night.  You can click on the headline for each Monday and be able to see what your son well more than likely learn about or encounter for that specific meeting.
Our older scouts will have the ability to teach and our younger scouts will have a lesson for the night.

2020 Events
The camping and day outing schedule for 2020 is filling out nicely.  By the 1st of the year the full calendar with approximate dates will be ready for viewing. If anyone has any questions we should be able to answer them fairly quickly.

Material from the winter C.O.H
At the winter court of honor we read some passages from the troop's 50 year anniversary program.  I have had a few requests for passages from the program and I will do you one better. I have taken pictures of the full program and will post them to our Facebook page. I will also include pages from the 40th anniversary if anyone is interested.

Winter Break
At any time during our winter break if your son would like to work on any requirements, finish up any merit badges or has any questions please don't hesitate to contact myself or any of our assistant scoutmasters. Most of our scouts are very close to a rank advancement. while everyone has some time on their hands why not work in a few rank requirements and tie up loose ends

M.B.U
Merit Badge University registration is open to the public. If you would like to work on merit badges over the Winter and have some time on February 15th the Three Fires Council is hosting a merit badge university at York High School in Elmhurst.  You have the ability to work on multiple merit badges and maybe even get a few during your time there during the day. Information on the event is on our website and on the Three Fires Council website. Included on our listing for the event is a hyper link that will take you to the proper web page.

In closing

Take a look at the website for details and check there every now and then for updates. We hope to see you all Monday night January 6th.  As always if you have any questions let us know.

S.M.S for 12 - 5

Posted by swolfgram on Dec 5 2021 - 9:23pm
Good evening everyone

It's a FANTASTIC December night!  Only 120 days till spring...
It can't come fast enough.  So what's new this week

Monday Meeting
St. Marks Church gym, 7p
This Monday our primary goal is to go over the day trip next weekend.  The secondary and tertiary goal will be planning the C..O.H on the 13th and start going over locations for 2022.

2021 Chicago day hike
December 11th
The events may unfold like this.
This year instead of taking the train into the city we would take the cars downtown and start the day at the Chicago historical museum.  From there we would go south to locations like the Billy Goat Tavern, Christ Kindl Market, and Water Tower Place / Michigan Avenue.  Because we would be touring the museum we can park in their lot for 10.00 for the day per car.  This would be a much lesser price than a weekend pass for the train.

We will formulate all the details at this weeks meeting and determine what we can do.

Money collection 2021
Please bring any money you have collected from any of this year's fundraisers to Monday's meeting. (Jerky, Popcorn and Wreaths)  We will NEED to have all fundraiser money turned in by December 9th.  This will allow enough time to square up with all scout accounts and get us ready to go for the 2022 season.  If you still owe the troop from any camp-outs, summer camp, high adventure or recharter please contact Dave K for the amount owed to the troop.
You can reach him at
Phone: 847 858 5097

December committee meeting
This year because we are having our P.L.C and C.o.H on the same night we are going to move the December C.M to the evening of the 9th.  With a backup night of the 16th.  This will be a non uniform adult meeting.  This will be a big meeting as we start to formulate our next year's worth of events.  I am asking all leaders and parents to attend this meeting.
It will be held at the Office bar and grill, 7p Thursday evening.

December P.L.C / C.O.H - update

S.M.S for 12 - 6

Posted by swolfgram on Dec 6 2020 - 11:33pm

Good evening everyone

I would like to thank everyone who was able to come out to Camp Kane for today's service project.  I know it was short notice but any time we can squeeze in some service hours in December we need to try.  We were able to get a lot done in a short time.  There is most definitely still enough to for every scout to get their fill of hours.  If next weekend is not crummy like they are predicting it will be, we can attempt to do a part 2 and this time I hope to be in town the full way through.
There are a few potential events coming in the next few weeks so I will keep everyone abreast of what is going on around town.

Monday meeting 12 - 6

For Monday's meeting we will be going over ideas for the calendar year 2021. Even though with everything still being and partial lockdown and nobody knows truly what will happen within the next few months there is some good news on the horizon with a vaccine for those people who most need it.   We can only hope that by next spring we can start camping again.

This will be a regular meeting 7:00 p.m. on our zoom channel.  Listed below is the link and I will send it out again at 6p tomorrow evening.

S.M.S for 12-10-23

Posted by swolfgram on Dec 11 2023 - 11:34am
Good evening everyone

A Friend's Greeting

I'd like to be the sort of friend
     that you have been to me;
I'd like to be the help that you've been
     always glad to be;
I'd like to mean as much to you
     each minute of the day
As you have meant, old friend of mine,
     to me along the way.

I'd like to do the big things
and the splendid things for you,
To brush the gray out of your skies
     and leave them only blue;
I'd like to say the kindly things
that I so oft have heard,
And feel that I could rouse your soul
the way that mine you've stirred.

I'd like to give back the joy
     that you have given me,
Yet that were wishing you a need
     I hope will never be;
I'd like to make you feel
as rich as I, who travel on
Undaunted in the darkest hours
     with you to lean upon.

I'm wishing at this Christmas time
     that I could but repay
A portion of the gladness
     that you've strewn along the way;
And could I have one wish this year,
     this only would it be:
I'd like to be the sort of friend
that you have been to me.

Edgar A. Guest.

S.M.S for 12-11-22

Posted by swolfgram on Dec 12 2022 - 12:22am

Good evening everyone

They say that a picture can say a thousand words. Attached to this letter is a picture that perfectly describes how our weekend went.  My choice for it would be....Wild. We were the official guinea pigs for the Yerkes Astronomy badge program and to say it was cool would be an understatement. From the foundations of the building to the archive attic we got to see and do some very unique and special things. Even with the outside looking like pea soup on Saturday night the observatory was out of this world.
(yes it's punny and yes I meant it)

Here is what's going on this week

Casey’s Safe Haven is a 501(c)3 non-profit holistic equine rescue dedicated to healing horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules in need. We will accept equines from animal control facilities, pony ride facilities, horses being retired from lesson programs, police force, and the race track. We also accept healthy animals donated by loving owners that for reasons beyond their control can no longer provide care. Our mission is to be a part of the solution by educating the public on the responsibilities and proper care of each equine so they receive the respect and dignity they deserve as living beings.

Anderson Animal Shelter

For more than fifty years, Anderson Humane has been the leading animal welfare organization in our community. We have been dedicated to creating positive connections between people and animals from day one because animals make us better!  Today, we place more than 4,000 pets into loving homes each year. Our innovative programs make the healing presence of animals available to seniors, veterans, and those in crisis.
